Frequently Asked Questions

How are decimal hours calculated?

Decimal hours convert the minutes part of your shift into a fraction of an hour (÷60). For example, 30 minutes = 0.5 hours. So 8 hours 30 minutes = 8.5 decimal hours, the standard format required by payroll departments.

What happens if my shift goes past midnight?

The calculator automatically detects overnight shifts. If your "End Time" is earlier than your "Start Time" (e.g., 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM), the tool assumes the end time occurs on the following day and correctly calculates an 8-hour shift.

Does this calculator deduct unpaid breaks?

Yes. Enter the break duration in minutes in the "Break" field; the calculator subtracts that time from total hours worked.

Are the gross pay calculations precise?

Gross pay is calculated by multiplying your hourly rate by exact decimal hours. This represents gross earnings only — before any US state, federal, or local tax deductions.

Is my time input data private?

Absolutely. All calculations run entirely inside your browser. No data is ever uploaded or stored on our servers.
